Roasted Butternut Squash Soup

Roasted butternut squash soup

.  .  .

In one of my previous blog posts, Fall Decorations, I shared how to decorate with squash and pumpkins.  They are beautiful for displaying and just as delicious to cook with. My two favorite ways to use squash and pumpkins are to roast or make cream soups.  Here is one easy recipe to do just that.

Roasted Butternut Squash soup is a rich hearty soup packed full of flavor and perfectly fitting to make at this time of year.  Serve as a starter for a holiday dinner gathering or double the recipe to satisfy a large get together with friends and family. The ingredients were roasted to bring out their natural nutty and sweet flavors.  It’s a basic and easy soup recipe to make and delicious to eat anytime.

Paris, Our Thoughts and Prayers

Paris, thoughts and prayers

.  .  .

It has been an incredible 24 hours.  I was home Friday, had FOX news on as I was cleaning and picking things up around the house.  I started to notice that the headlines on the news weren’t changing and I kept hearing the same words repeated, Paris… shooting… hostages…deaths. What was unfolding before my eyes wasn’t reality to me, but it was.  I sat glued to my chair watching the news as the events happened minute by minute.  At one point,  all the news organizations were asked not to televise the situation developing as Paris police stormed the Batacian theater to rescue the hostages.  The situation ended and the unwanted news of those who were killed and injured were reported along with the other attacks that happened at the soccer stadium and restaurants and bars.

The Military, diy U.S. Army Keychains

diy US Army keychains

Veterans Day is November 11.  It is a day dedicated to honoring the military men and women who have served and defended our country.  We are truly grateful for all that they have done.

I came upon these U.S. Army patches at a local vintage/antique store.  They were once a part of the uniforms that have since retired.  The slight fading, threads unraveling and the wear and tear on these patches are reminders of where they came from.  I brought them home and decided to reuse and repurpose them as keychains.  If you’re looking to make this project, check the local thrift/antique stores and the Army Surplus stores for the materials. These U.S. Army keychains are a great way to keep the military men and women in our thoughts and prayers.  It’s also a wonderful way to show our support.  The kids will enjoy making these with you, and at the same time what a great opportunity it would be to share and have conversations about Veterans Day, the military and the history of our nation.

Fall Decorations, Squash, Pumpkins, Nuts, and Pinecones

Fall decorations

Autumn 2014, acorn image

For a brief period of time, the warm colors of fall are here for us to enjoy.  To bring the season into decorting the home, I like to keep it simple by incorporating natural elements and layering them with what I have.  To create a little vignette above the cabinets, I used squash with soft hues, acorns and leaves, chocolate beans, a large platter, and a pair of pewter candlesticks.  Lastly, to give height and attention to the area, one large pinecone wreath hung on the wall with a beautiful satin ribbon.  A similar arrangement can easily be put together over the fireplace, on a shelf, at the center of a table or the kitchen island.  It’s easy to add or replace certain elements to reflect your personal style.
