The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies

The long wait is finally over.  The conclusion to The Hobbit trilogy, The Battle of the Five Armies by director, Peter Jackson opened in US theaters, December 17, 2014.  Going to see this movie will be a family affair for us with lots of popcorn and sodas in the course of a little over two and a half hours.   We will be transported back to Middle-earth one last time.

This is the  third and final movie in the film trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, The Hobbit. In the story, Thorin Oakenshield {Richard Armitage} and 11 other Dwarves with the help of Bilbo Baggins {Martin Freeman} came back to the Lonely Mountain to reclaim their homeland from the Dragon Smaug.  Once they defeated the dragon, Thorin has to defend his land.  The battle for the survival of Middle-Earth hangs on this epic battle that united Dwarves, Elves, and Men to defeat Evil Sauron and his Orc armies.

Tolkien

It has been an incredible ride for me to see Middle Earth be retold on the big screen, The Hobbit Trilogy and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.  What I enjoyed about these fantasy adventure films  is the depth and history that J.R.R. Tolkien had poured into his writing of these novels.

The journey to Middle-earth will continue and live in my memories, books and on DVDs.  Here are some memorable quotes and scenes from the two epic trilogies.

.

Tolkien, The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.  Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole full of worms and oozy smells.  This was a hobbit-hole and that means good food, a warm hearth, and all the comforts of home.
-Bilbo Baggins, The Hobbit:  An Unexpected Journey

One day I’ll remember.  Remember everything that happened, the good, the bad, those who survived, and those that did not.
-Bilbo Baggins, The Hobbit:  The Battle of the Five Armies

.

Tolkien, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo's sword

“I have… I have never used a sword in my life.” Bilbo Baggins

“And I hope you never have to.  But if you do, remember this:  true courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one.” Gandalf
The Hobbit:  An Unexpected Journey

.

Tolkien, Bilbo Baggins, The Hobbits: Desolation of Smaug

“You’ve changed, Bilbo Baggins.  You’re not the same Hobbit as the one who left the Shire…”  Gandalf

“I was going to tell you… I found something in the Goblin tunnels.” Bilbo Baggins

“Found what?  What did you find?” Gandalf

“…. My courage.” Bilbo Baggins

“Good… well, that’s good.  You’ll need it” Gandalf
The Hobbit:  The Desolation of Smaug

.

Tolkien, The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies

Will you follow me one last time?
–Thorin Oakenshield, The Hobbit:  The Battle of the Five Armies

.

Tolkien, Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies

You have but one question to answer.  How shall this day end?
Gandalf, The Hobbit:  The Battle of the Five Armies

 .

Tolkien, Galadriel- The Lord of the Rings: the fellowship of the ring

For the time will come when hobbits will shape the fortunes of all…

Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.

The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife.  Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all.  Yet hope remains while the Company is true.
-Galadriel, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

.

Tolkien, Fellowship of the ring frodo-gandalf-3

“I wish it need not have happened in my time.”  Frodo

“So do I…and so do all who live to see such times.  But that is not for them to decide.  All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”  Gandalf
The Lord of the Rings:  The Fellowship of the Ring

.

Tolkien, Fellowship of the Ring , you shall not pass

You shall not pass
-Gandalf, The Lord of the Rings:  The Fellowship of the Ring

.

Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers, frodo-and-sam

“I can’t do this, Sam.”  Frodo

“I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.”  Sam

“What are we holding onto, Sam?”  Frodo

“That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for.”  Sam
The Lord of the Rings:  The Two Towers

.

Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King

“I didn’t think it would end this way.”  Pippin

“End? No, the journey doesn’t end here. Death is just another path… One that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass… And then you see it.”  Gandalf

“What? Gandalf?… See what?”  Pippin

“White shores… and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.”  Gandalf

“Well, that isn’t so bad.”  Pippin

“No… No it isn’t.”  Gandalf
The Lord of the Rings:  The Return of the King

.

Tolkien, Gimli, The Lord of the Rings-The Return of the King

Certainty of death.  Small chance of success.  What are we waiting for?
Gimli, The Lord of the Rings:  The Return of the King

.

Tolkien, aragorn The Return of the King-2

Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand! Men of the West!
-Aragorn, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

.

Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King-2

Now come the days of the king.  May they be blessed.
-Gandalf, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

.

Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King-3

This day does not belong to one man but to all.  Let us together rebuild this world… that we may share in the days of peace.”
-Aragorn, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

.

Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King-4

My friends… you bow to no one.
-Aragorn, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

.

Tolkien, the Ring

One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
