Easter Eggs, Natural Dyes

Easter eggs - natural dyes

.  .  .

This was my first attempt at dyeing Easter Eggs using natural ingredients.  The resulting color palette was a lovely pastel shades of green, blue, and cream.

After browsing through the internet and reading about the different ingredients, I decided to use what I had available which were frozen blueberries, frozen spinach, and red onion.   At the end of the experiment, I became quite discourage at the outcome of the colors the eggs took on, not at all the expected colors I thought.  The blueberries made pink eggs…the spinach had no effect on the eggs… and I actually liked the soft pink from the red onion.  After I saw the outcome, I left the eggs to dry and went off to do other things.   About an hour later I came back and discovered  the color transformation of my eggs {see above picture} and the excitement I had about this project came back.

I dyed a second batch of eggs to share the results with you.  Depending on the length of time the eggs were submerged in the liquid will effect how deep the colors will be.  Included in three of the pictures below are the egg color progressions, from the first minute they came out of the liquid to about an hour later.

Winter Citrus Salad

Winter Citrus Salad

Pretty… simple…. refreshing… and delicious Winter Citrus Salad.  Neely Wang introduced this salad in her recent blog post, here.  Her beautiful photos enticed me to try it… and glad I did. Neely was the photographer at an event that featured Chef Tony Najiola of Central Market.  He was gracious to provide the winter citrus salad recipe for us to try.

Gift Wrapping M&M’s Chocolate Candies with a Twist for Valentine’s Day

Valentine gift wrapping ~ M&Ms

Sweet little gifts of M&M’s candies packaged in pink/white tissue paper for Valentine’s Day.

For the past few years the kids and I would fill these clear, long, skinny bags with M&M’s chocolate candies {pic above}, seal them, attach Valentine messages, and give them out to their friends. Simple and fun.  For this Valentine’s Day, I decided to do it again and add the gift wrapping step for a pretty presentation.

Industrial Elements, ideas and inspirations at Fran’s Chocolates

Industrial - window image

Merging something new with something old… vintage… rustic…or industrial in a design will add character and charm.

This could be achieved on a big scale by converting a factory or a warehouse into a retail/office space or by simply adding an element or a vintage piece to a room or a display area. Examples of this could be seen at the new Fran’s Chocolates company headquarters and retail space. The building is located in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood, just south of the industrial district, map.  Built in 1882, the 31,500-square-foot facility was once the site of the old Seattle Brewing and Malting Company {picture here}.  It’s exciting to see the building with ties to historic past now given a new facelift and a new purpose.

Come, take a look……
