Finding inspirations … in this Beautiful Hampton Cottage

Inspiration board

. . .

It has been a while since our family room got a makeover. Over the course of the last year I have been brainstorming, redesigning, gathering and exploring different ideas for the space {approximately 16′ x 11′}.   This will be an on-going  project for me.  For now, I have narrowed down the colors for the room to mostly neutrals with splashes of color as accents {see the above picture}.  When I came across this Hampton cottage while browsing the internet, I instantly was drawn to it.  The house captured the feel of what I wanted for the family room and the colors used were similar to mine.  Finding inspirations for my project are always helpful to direct, guide and visually give me the sense of how something might be or look like… and this house did just that.  The interior designer, Jenny Wolf, created simple interior spaces yet elegant, cozy and definitely kid friendly.

The house with its weathered shingle exterior, lush green foliage, boxwood, and hydrangeas is a welcoming sight.

Potato, Fennel and Leek Soup with Asparagus

Potato, fennel and leek soup with fresh asparagus

.  .  .

A wonderful blend of flavors using basic ingredients to make this delicious and creamy soup for springtime { Potato, Fennel and Leek Soup with Asparagus}.  The anise flavor from the fennel adds just the right amount of sweetness.  To top it off, I decided to garnish the soup with cooked asparagus for color, texture and because it’s in season.

This recipe is a slight variation of Lynn Morris’ Potato, Fennel and Leek Soup.  To see her other recipe for Potato Salad,  click here.

Exploring Tide Pools

the beach / tide pools near Me Kwa Mooks Park pic1 w700 x 950h-1

.  .  .

The days have been cloudy with the usual rain in the forecast this week.  Bill, the kids and I took advantage of the break in the weather, low tide, and sunshine and drove to the beach and had a fun day exploring.  It was a short drive to Me Kwa Mooks Park in West Seattle near Alki beach.  Just across the street from the park,  with our boots on, we were ready to venture out into the tide pools.

The beaches here in the Pacific Northwest are great destinations for our family to visit.  {see other pictures at the beach here and here}.

Easter Eggs, Natural Dyes

Easter eggs - natural dyes

.  .  .

This was my first attempt at dyeing Easter Eggs using natural ingredients.  The resulting color palette was a lovely pastel shades of green, blue, and cream.

After browsing through the internet and reading about the different ingredients, I decided to use what I had available which were frozen blueberries, frozen spinach, and red onion.   At the end of the experiment, I became quite discourage at the outcome of the colors the eggs took on, not at all the expected colors I thought.  The blueberries made pink eggs…the spinach had no effect on the eggs… and I actually liked the soft pink from the red onion.  After I saw the outcome, I left the eggs to dry and went off to do other things.   About an hour later I came back and discovered  the color transformation of my eggs {see above picture} and the excitement I had about this project came back.

I dyed a second batch of eggs to share the results with you.  Depending on the length of time the eggs were submerged in the liquid will effect how deep the colors will be.  Included in three of the pictures below are the egg color progressions, from the first minute they came out of the liquid to about an hour later.
