Fall City Farms

“Let’s go to the farm!” The unanimous answer from our family is always, “Yeah, let’s go!”. The farm we love to visit is Fall City Farms, located here in Fall City, Washington just a few miles from our house. We’ve been going there since we discovered it when our oldest child started walking, 15 years ago. Rob and Debbie Arenth have been managing the farm since 1984. The farm has not always been full of fields of pumpkins, vegetables or flowers. They began initially raising cattle, and in the nineties, started growing garlic and corn. Now they have variety of vegetables along with cider, honey, cheeses and eggs. October is busy; pumpkins are ready to be picked, apples to be pressed to make cider and mini donuts (with cinnamon & sugar) to be eaten up by our kids.

In December, Rob and Debbie will open the Christmas tree farm to customers. During the summer, they host outdoor weddings and other special events. If you’re in Seattle, and stopped at the Grand Central Bakery for lunch, you might be eating produce from here.

This is a special place for our family. Our half hour visit will often turn to two hours as we watch our kids explore, be amazed and open themselves to let their imagination just run. There were many “first” at the farm for them; first time gathering eggs in the chicken coop, first time riding on a tractor, first time holding a baby goat, first time fishing in the pond and catching a fish, first time making cider and finding that first pumpkin.

As of 2013, Fall City Farms has closed their farm to the public, but will be opened in December to sell U-cut Christmas trees. Please check their website, www.fallcityfarms.com for more information.

Madison Grove Farm

A great dinner for a great cause, it’s a date! We recently attended the annual dinner & auction fundraising event at Madison Grove Farm. It’s a non-profit equestrian farm located in Fall City, Washington. Marla McNary, the founder and her husband Darin have been working to build, expand and make the farm to be a place to rejuvenate and to rehabilitate neglected/abused horses as well as struggling children and families. This is also a place our daughter, Grace has been taking riding lessons, learning to care for the animals on the farm and be a volunteer to help other kids. In just a few years, we have come to know Marla and see how she touches so many lives. The farm gives kids a place to let their guard down, feel normal and have fun.

Here are a few pictures from our dinner at the farm.

The weather was just right, warm and blue sky.

Cakes to be auctioned off for dessert (the highest bid total per table gets to choose their cake first).

Star, a thoroughbred is the newest addition to the Madison Grove Farm family. She was rescued from neglect and starvation in 2011 (see the before & after pictures here). Madison Grove Farm partnered with Serenity Equine Rescue to give this beautiful horse a new life.

Garden & Outdoor Space

This outdoor space is quite inviting. A wonderful spot to do nothing… maybe a little reading, drinking or napping. At night, it’s a cozy place to sit by the fire and roast a few marshmallows.

Vern, a retired teacher and Ruthie, an interior designer have worked tirelessly transforming their outdoor space from grass and overgrown rhododendrons to a place of entertainment and relaxation. They kept the color pallet simple, using mainly white and shades of green and mixing in other plants and flowers. For more inspirations and ideas, you can follow Ruthie on Pinterest.

Hunting Dogs

In July, the Whid Isle Brittany Club hosted the annual AKC approved Hunt Test. The test was held on the grounds of the Canine Country Club in Fall City, Washington. Particpants came from all over Washington state, Idaho, Oregon and western Canada, or just a few miles away (me) to have their pointing breeds tested in the field and scored by AKC judges.

I participated for the first time with Glory, our French Brittany. With high expectations of our one year old puppy to pass the junior level easily, because she is just a natural at it, I was excited to be handed a ribbon after our test! I went in to the test with the gut feeling that she could do it, all on her own with barely any training yet to date! Looking at her score sheets, I noticed that the name on it was not hers and the listed Breed was not right either. What a bummer…. Glory did not qualify for the Junior Hunter. We have a lot of training to do and will require time in the field.

Master Hunting Dog Test

On the second day I was given the opportunity to plant birds and was able to watch these master hunting dogs work the field, an awesome site to see. In order to cover the distance and have a clear visual of the dogs, the Judges are the one’s on horseback. The event was held for 2 days and I would recommend anyone interested in hunting dogs or just with the curiosity to see these hunting dogs at work.
