This is a follow-up to the blog post, An Evening In Seattle & Pike Place Market. In the blog post, I talked about my weekly shopping trip to the market many years ago. I wanted to be able to get what I needed and leave within an hour including finding a place to park my car. Other times I would linger for awhile and enjoy an early morning latte with a fresh baked almond croissant.
On a recent Saturday, I asked Bill if he would like to accompany me early in the morning to Seattle for coffee at Pike Place Market and stroll through the streets before heading home {and before the kids start to wonder what’s for breakfast}. Bill thought that will be a nice morning excursion and came with me. We had a great time that morning. The only minor set back for Bill was when I decided to do a little shopping, he was a trooper about it.

Come with us on our walk and use the map above to guide you.
Pike Place Market is a busy place, especially during the summer months. People come from all over the world or from just down the street to experience the market, shop or see all that it has to offer. Not having a plan or not familiar with the area, the trip can be overwhelming and stressful. I hope the information in this blog post will be helpful for you if and when you decide to visit the market. .
The best time to go to Pike Place Market is in the morning before the crowd and traffic. Once there, The Market Parking Garage {blue star ★ on the map} on Western Ave. is a great place to park for a few reasons. The parking garage has an elevator to take you up to the skybridge that will connect you directly to the market. .
.
The view from the skybridge of the the waterfront and the surrounding area is incredible. I used the “zoom” feature on the camera to get this picture of Mount Rainier and the Seattle Seahawks football stadium {Century Link Field}. .
.
Another reason to park here is the easy access to the waterfront from the lower level of the garage.

Start the tour . . . . .
We will begin our walking tour at the bottom of the map at Dilauranti ❶ and work our way to the top of the map at Cutters ⓫.
.
DeLauenti Specialty Food & Wine ❶ is the place to find a large selection of cheeses, olive oil, wines, cured meats, pasta, and other specialty foods.
.
Here we were standing near the corner of 1st Avenue and Pike Place. To the left of this picture is First & Pike News⑬ {not shown}. This cobblestone street {Post Alley} will lead you down to the lower level and around the corner to the Gum Wall⑫. The Information Center⑭ is to the right next to the fence.
.
MarketSpice❷ has been selling teas and spices since 1911 with over 200 varieties to choose from. Their signature MarketSpice Tea is a sweet blend of black tea with cinnamon and orange.
.
Below the Public Market sign is the World Famous Pike Place Fish Market ❸ where you will see fishmongers tossing fish up to the counter to be prepared for packaging. The reaction of the audience is just as much fun to watch.
.
On the corner of Pike Pl. and Pine St. is Beecher’s Handmade Cheese❹. Through the large glass windows you can see cheese being made. They opened their doors to the public on November 20, 2003. Over the years they have won numerous awards for their handmade cheeses. Beecher’s cheeses are made from milk without bovine growth hormones, hydrogenated oils, nitrous and polysorbate. The milk supplier is located in a nearby town of Duvall, just 20 miles from where we live. Their signature cheese, Flagship is a favorite of mine to serve with other cheeses and crackers when entertaining.
.
Sur La Table❺ opened its first store here in the market in 1972 offering cooking and baking supplies from around the world.
.
They have expanded to over 100 stores across the country and their products are also availble through their catalog and online.
.
A wonderful place to stop for lunch/brunch or dinner is at a little French bistro Cafe Campagne❻, located on the corner of Post Alley and Pine St.
.
To be in the heart of Pike Place Market and close to all the attractions of downtown Seattle, Inn At the Market❼ is the ideal place to stay at while visiting the city.
.
At the entrance of the hotel is a tranquille and airy outdoor courtyard.
.
Guests can enjoy the view of Elliott Bay, Puget Sound, Olympic Mountains and the city skyline from the fifth floor deck. This is one of the reasons why I like to stay here ….. especially during the summer time. .
.
.
.
Watson Kennedy❽ is a little gift shop located in the courtyard at Inn At the Market. They carry a nice variety of new and vintage products.
.
We finally reached our destination at the little French bakery, Le Panier ❾ and enjoyed some time together with our hot lattes, croissants …..
.
…. and macrarons.
.
.
Our purchases from the bakery.
.
This is the original/first Starbucks❿ coffee shop {1971}. I decided not to attempt to go in or wait in the long line that was forming out the front entrance. As many as 7 other people near me were taking pictures of the store front. A popular tourist attraction.
.
We {I} did a little bit of shopping before Bill hinted that it was time to head back home.
.
.
Always a welcoming sight to see rows and rows of fresh flowers throughout the market.
.
After a long day of walking and touring Pike Place Market, the last stop to end the day and enjoy a Northwest dinner overlooking Puget Sound is at Cutters Crabhouse ⓫.
I hope the tour was enjoyable and informative for you.

Kay,
What a wonderful tour of the Seattle Fish Market. I am pinning photos for reference when I get to go to Seattle again.
Judith
Thank you Judith. I’m glad you enjoyed the tour and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Have a great day!
Hi Kay,
My hubby and I are sailing the Sound for the next 10 days and thought we might take the ferry from Bremerton to Seattle for a day or two. So in our planning of what we could do in Seattle I remembered you wrote up this Seattle stroll so I’ve printed it out and hope we are able to ferry over to walk your little tour. Thanks for the ideas. Other than Pike Place Market I didn’t know of these other shops and eateries so it’ll be so much fun to explore new places.
How much time would you recommend we allow for a day stroll? We don’t plan to spend the night.
Such a great annual trip for the two of you, Lori!! Hopefully the weather will be beautiful and sunny during your time exploring the Puget Sound and the Market.
When Bill and I visited Pike Place Market first thing in the morning (9:00am), we were there for about 2 hours, before the crowds. We did a quick walk through before sitting down for coffee. The market tends to get crowded by noon on the weekends. I think 3-4 hours will be a good amount of time to stroll through the area, anymore time will be up to you….there are plenty of things to do and see. If you are planning to stay for lunch/dinner, a reservation is recommended at Cutters Crabhouse and Cafe Campagne.
One other thing, the elevator at the Market Parking Garage to take you up to the skybridge and Pike Place Market….If you take it down to the lower level of the garage, you will be just across the street from the Seattle waterfront area/Seattle Aquarium. The Seattle Ferry Terminal will be about 6-7 blocks south of the parking garage.
Have a wonderful time! Please feel free to contact me.
Thank you, Kay. We’re looking forward to exploring your suggestions.
Is it necessary to make a reservation for Pikes Market or can you stroll through it at your own pace?
Hi Andrea F,
No reservation necessary. It is an open public area…most shops and booths at the market will open around 9am (bakeries and coffee shops tend to open earlier) and close between 6-9pm. I hope you will enjoy your trip to Pike Place Market!
