Spring, Forcing Blooms from Flowering Branches

Spring flowering trees & shrubs

Bill and I {mostly Bill} have been pruning and trimming the trees surrounding the area around our house to get them ready for the Spring season.  These beautiful white flowers in the pitcher was taken from the discarded pile of cut branches of our plum tree.  They weren’t blooming yet, but I “force bloom” them to get the result that you see above.  The process took 3-4 days and here are the steps on how to do it.

First, select a container to put the branches in and fill it with water {at room temperature}.  Cut the branches to the desire length and put the cut stem end in the container.

Wait a few days and check on the water level often to see if it needs refilling.  The branches will soak up a lot of water during the first few days.  Within 2 to 3 days noticeable changes will occur on the  branches-little green flower buds will start to emerge.

After 4 days, the buds should start to open up into little flower blossoms.  The flowers will last for a few more days before the petals begin to drop off.

Other great fruit/flowering trees and shrubs for forcing blooms:
pear  •  apple  •  cherry  •  magnolias  •  dogwoods  •  Forsythia  •  flowering quince {Chaenomeies}  •  pussy willow {Salix discolor}  •  redbud {Cercis}  •   crabapple  •
spirea {Spiraea}

The length of time to force the branches to bloom will vary depending on types of branches and when they were picked.
