Spooky Halloween Treats

halloween spooky treats

Transform ordinary cookies, doughnuts, and cupcakes into something spooky and slightly creepy for Halloween.  Whether they are homemade or store bought treats, with the addition of little googly eyes will instantly turn them into little monsters and creatures that the kids will have fun eating. A little dab of royal icing onto the back of each one of these eyes will hold it in place.  These adorable candy eyes can be homemade with royal icing or purchased at the grocery stores or specialty stores. The royal icing recipe is available at the end of the blog post.

Grace got her fancy nails on for this special occasion… It made it  a little challenging to glue some of the eyes onto the cookies and doughnuts.  But it was fun and she did it.

Homemade Edible Googly Eyes

Use parchment paper or waxed paper as a liner

The key to making these fun googly eyes is to get the icing to the right consistency, not too thick and not to thin.  The icing should hold its shape and thin enough to flow smooth when piping to form little round dots. Any little dimples and irregularities should settle back down and disappear into the icing to form smooth round mounds. Let it dry before adding the next layer. To make the pupils, add black food coloring to the icing.  Pipe a small black dot onto the eye to make the pupil.  Allow the eyes 12 hours to dry before using them.

Royal Icing

Ingredients

2   cups confectioner’s sugar
2   teaspoons meringue powder
3-5  tablespoons water

Instructions:

In a bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a wire whisk attachment {or the paddle attachment}, combine confectioners’ sugar, meringue powder,  and 3 tablespoons of water to start.  With the mixer on low speed, add the remaining water as needed a little at a time until the mixture reaches the desired thickness. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high, whisk for about 2-4 minutes until soft glossy peaks form.
